Wanaka is a town in the Southern Lakes district in The Otago Region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is situated at the southern end of Lake Wanaka, adjacent to the outflow of the lake to the Clutha River. It is the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park. It's an ideal holiday destination, suitable for everyone; families, couples, independent travelers, anyone at all who appreciates the great outdoors and the numerous activities it offers.
There is a huge range of activities you can do including fishing, tramping, tennis, horse trekking, heli skiing/snowboarding, fishing, hunting, gold panning and golfing. Whatever your age, ability or sense of adventure you'll find an activity that suits you here.
Mount Aspiring, one of New Zealand's highest peaks, is located close by and well worth a visit. Wanaka is a paradise filled with mountains, glaciers, river valleys and alpine lakes.
It will take you about one hour by car to drive from Wanaka to Queenstown. Wanaka has a very relaxed atmosphere, the pace of life is a lot slower than in nearby Queenstown.
It's never boring though, you can do all the high adrenalin activities here too! If you want to try paragliding, jet boating any of the other activities in a more quiet and secluded atmosphere, this may be the place for you.

Accommodation is in high demand throughout the summer months (particularly in january and February) visitors are also advised to book in advance. There are also numerous DOC campsites scattered around the lake where you can park your camper van or for those tenting it. |
