The Kahurangi National Park is situated in the north-west of the South Island of New Zealand. Located in the park is Kahurangi Point, regarded as the boundary between the West Coast, Tasman and Nelson regions, all three regions are represented within the park. Kahurangi National Park covers 4,515 km², it is the second largest of New Zealand's fourteen national parks.

Located in the park is the world famous 82 km Heaphy Track, which is classed as one of New Zealand’s Great walks. The Eastern end of the Heaphy Track begins at the end of Brown Aorere Valley Road, 28km south-west of Collingwood. The track crosses the Park’s full range of landscapes, starting from the junction of the Brown and Aorere Rivers, over expansive tussock downs to the lush podocarp rain forests, through nikau palms and down to the roaring Tasman sea on the West Coast. the track ends at the Kohaihai River mouth, 15km north of Karamea

Mount Owen (1,875 m) is featured in the first of The Lord of The Rings movie, The Fellowship of the Ring. When the characters, lead by Aragorn, leave Moria they emerge onto a rocky plateau. This was filmed on the slopes of Mount Owen. There are a number of caves in the marble karst areas on the flanks of the mountain, including New Zealand's longest cave system, Bulmer Cavern, which extends for 32 kilometres. Mount Owen lies within Kahurangi National Park. The Hope Saddle crosses its eastern flank. The Owen plateau is regarded by scientists as the finest example of glacial karst (weather worn limestone), in the Southern Hemisphere. This area has one of the most diverse varieties of alpine flora to be found in New Zealand. Rare bird sightings may include, Rock Wren, Kea, Kaka and Falcon,

The Kahurangi National Park activities include, fishing, hunting, kayaking, white water rafting and mountain climbing, tours and guides are available for all of these activities. There are a number of short walks in the park, the more popular being Wangapeka track, or try one of the short walks at Wainui Falls, the Grove or Payne’s Ford. Go mountain biking on the Rameka Track, kayak on the Aorere River. Take a 4WD tour to Farewell Spit, it’s a natural wonderland.

There are many backcountry huts and several campsites in Kahurangi National Park, all administered by DOC. Everybody must have an entry permit to enter any of New Zealand‘s National Parks, they can be acquired from any one of the many Department Of Conservation offices located throughout the country. Remember when in the park, its best for the nature if you only take pictures and leave foot-prints.
