Dunedin

Dunedin is the second largest city in the South Island of New Zealand. The early settlers from Scotland and China struck gold and the city grew quickly. In its time around 1871 Dunedin, in Otago, was the cultural and economic centre of New Zealand. Notably the Grand Train Station, Town Hall and University are all remarkable examples of New Zealand’s 19th century heritage.

Dunedin was founded by the Scottish Free Church and was initially meant to be called Edinburgh. They ended up calling it Dunedin instead, which is actually the Gaelic word for the same city. There still remains a very strong Scottish feel to the city. On New Years Eve they even eat haggis! There is a statue of Robbie Burns in the town square, and the sound of bagpipes can be heard on every occasion.

Dunedin city centre is full of kerbside cafes, top quality local craft, art, jewellery and fashion design outlets.

Also the home of Otago rugby and the Highlanders super 14 team, Dunedin’s infamous rugby stadium Carisbrook is a must-see for any Rugby fan. Colloquially known as the "House of Pain", both domestic and international games are played here, usually to sell out crowds.

The city is renowned for its proximity to some of New Zealand’s most incredible wildlife. The Otago Peninsula, just a short drive away, is home to a colony of the worlds shyest penguins: the Yellow Eyed. You'll also find the only mainland breeding colony of the Royal Albatross and rare New Zealand Sea Lions here. Dunedin is also home to the steepest street in the world, Baldwin Street.

Dunedin is a first world city and offers the full range of accommodation.
