3. Go Whale watching in Kaikoura

Seeing one of these mighty sea creatures in its own natural environment is an experience you won't forget in a hurry. Sperm whales can be found all over Kaikoura searching for their particular kind of plankton.

There are also hundreds of dolphins here too, along with a number of other species, including Seals and rare and endangered Hector Dolphins.

Just off the Kaikoura coastline, there's a marine environment so rich in nutrients that it attracts some of the most spectacular marine creatures on the planet. The Giant Sperm Whale is one of them. This breathtaking creature can grow up to 20 metres in length and has the largest brain of any animal alive.

They can be seen all year round in Kaikoura and this is one of the reasons why it has become the most popular whale watching destination in the world.

Tour operators normally have around six tours daily, depending on the season. All boats are crewed by experienced teams familiar with local sea conditions. They are not suitable for children under three years of age. During high season (November to April) there is a large demand for places so it?s best to book well in advance.

Tours are very much dependent on the sea conditions. If it's not possible to go out on a day you have already booked for, every effort is made to re-schedule the trip.
