Nelson Lakes National Park is located in the Nelson region on the South Island of New Zealand.

The Nelson region is situated in the northernmost corner of the South Island of New Zealand, bordering onto Marlborough in the east and the Tasman Region in the west. The capital of the Nelson region is Nelson, which is surrounded to three sides by mountains, giving it a mediterrainean climate. This region is a go ahead region, where many people come to enjoy the most sunshine hours per year in all of New Zealand. Known worldwide are its 3 National Parks: Abel Tasman National Park, Kahurangi National Park and the Nelson Lakes National Park. Nelson is renowned for its active artist community, giving the town a very characteristic lifestyle.

Nelsons history is a very colourful one. This area is named after Admiral Nelson, who's Armies defeated the French and Spanish navies in the battle of Trafalgar.

Due to this areas many sunshine hours a year, it is the perfect centre for both ecotourism and adventure tourism.
The three National Parks offer many opportunities for adventure. Nelsons activities include many scenic walks, mountain biking or longer tramping tracks through native forests, beside secluded lakes and along pristine coastline. Sea kayaking, fishing, diving, sailing, or a leisurely boat cruise, are good ways to enjoy the Tasman Bay. Horse riding and golf are also popular activities. There are some extensive cave systems around Takaka Hill and Mount Owen, or go on an organised tour with one of our recommended guides, and learn all that there is to know about this remarkable region.

The Nelson Lakes National Park is the local winter playground. The Rainbow Ski Area, has some exciting ski options and spectacular views. Trout fishing and camping are popular here in the summer.

Nelson is the gateway to The Abel Tasman National Park, The Kahurangi National Park, and The Nelson Lakes National Park. There are some more natural attractions close to Nalson city worth checking out. The Maitai Valley, Tahunanui Beach, Richmond Forest Park and Rabbit Island Beach are all worth a visit.
For the kids there is Tahuna Beach with a zoo, fun park, mini golf, bmx course, skateboard ramp, tennis courts, and rollerblading ring. You can also take a leisurely tour of the local olive groves, vineyards, boutique breweries and artist galleries, is a nice way to pass the time in the Nelson Region. A healthy nightlife scene can be found at a number of bars and nightclubs within Nelson city.
The city has a compact and varied shopping selection. The Outdoor Market held every Saturday, is always worth a look. You'll find many of the local artists showing their wares here and it can be an amazing gastronomical experience as well.

For those who prefer the slower pace there are many different museums in Nelson to give you an insight into our colourful history.

There is accommodation here to suit all tastes, from budget to five star. There is something here for everyone.
