The Abel Tasman National Park is situated in the Tasman Region at the northern end of the South Island of New Zealand. It is the smallest national park in the country, with only 225 km². The park consists of forested, hilly country to the north of the valleys of the Takaka and Riwaka Rivers. The park is bounded to the north by the waters of Golden Bay and Tasman Bay. The nearest large town is Motueka, 20 km to the south. Nelson is situated 70 km south-east of the park.

The park is named after the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, who in 1642 became the first reported European explorer to sight New Zealand, from his ships Heemskerck and Zeehaen.

The Abel Tasman National Park is a world renowned for its scenic walking tracks.

The Abel Tasman Coastal Track, at 51 km, from Marahau to Totaranui, is one of the Great Walks, which follows the coastline along crystal clear bays, backed by lush sub-tropical forests. On this walk you can swim in the bays, dolphins are regularly seen, as well as many native birds.

An inland route, The Abel Tasman Inland Track, is less popular but has some magnificent views of the Golden Bay coastline, don’t forget to take your own water on this one.

There are many backcountry huts and several campsites in Able Tasman National Park, all are administered by DOC. Everybody must have an entry permit to enter New Zealand‘s National Parks, they can be acquired from any one of the many Department Of Conservation offices located throughout the country. Remember when in the park, its best for the nature if you only take pictures and leave only foot-prints.

Kayaking, hunting, fishing, camping and sightseeing are other Tasman activities enjoyed in this park. Another way to enjoy this spectacular area is by taking one of the many day or overnight boat cruises on offer. Go for a week! It’s a great way to relax and enjoy nature at its best.

If you are looking for somewhere to stay either side of The Abel Tasman National Park, The Nelson Region has accommodation to suit all tastes, from budget to five star, there is something here for everyone. Also there is a superb range of accommodation in The Golden Bay area, there are lodges, hotel, motel, holiday houses, apartments and boutique accommodation , for comfort and style, while homestays and farmstays provide a true Kiwi experience. There are camping grounds, backpacker and budget options to ensure that everyone can find some accommodation to suit their needs.
