Whangarei is New Zealand’s northern most city and is the main centre for the Northland Region. Situated 166 km north of Auckland on State Highway 1. Whangarei City is a sub-tropical haven surrounded by fertile farmland, orchids, native forests, beaches and a deep water harbour, Northland’s main sea port, located on the eastern coast of the North Auckland Peninsula. Whangarei is the gateway to The Bay of Islands. Whangarei is a charming little city nestled at the head of the harbour, among bush clad hills. The Quayside Town Basin is in a handy location near the heart of the city, and is a popular haven for international yachts and locals as well. The city has all of the services and shopping options of a modern city, there is a wide range of cafes and restaurants for all to enjoy, bars and night clubs also give the city a buzzing nightlife. Don’t forget to check out the growers market every Saturday morning in the Forum North car-park, it’s a gastronomical delight.
For something completely different check out Zion Wildlife Gardens. Get up close to real loins and white tigers. There is always something to see or do at the Quarry Gardens, with extensive gardens, walkways and water features developed in an abandoned quarry site cut deep into a hillside yet only minutes from town, just off State Highway 1.
There are so many amazing beaches up and down the coast. The white sandy beaches of Bream Bay between Ruakaka and Waipu stretch as far as the eye can see. A 35 km drive east passed some harbour bays(safe swimming), an 18 hole golf course and the Parua Bay Pub takes you out to the Whangarei Heads, where you will find Ocean Beach with its awesome surf, massive sand dunes and Mount Manaia. 460 metres above the entrance to Whangarei Harbour, the majestic Mount Manaia towers over the heads, covered with native forest. Walking tracks lead to the top giving spectacular views of the coast, harbour and the outer islands. Bream Head and Smugglers Cove also offer scenic walks.
Heading northeast out of town through Tikiponga you must stop and see the spectacular 25 metre Whangarei falls. Further north are more awesome surf beaches at the beautiful Matapouri Bay, Whale Bay, Sandy Bay, Patua North, Whananaki beaches and the Mimiwhangata Coastal Park. Don't miss the walk from Whale Bay across to Matapouri. following the coastline, through the pohutakawa trees and Native bush, this is a 30 minute walk along the ridge, with great views over spectacular bays, each unique in itself.
Most of Whangarei activities involve the ocean. Whangarei is famous for the world class diving at the Poor Knights Islands, where you'll find the biggest sea cave in the world, situated 12 miles off the coast from Tutukaka. Surfing, sea kayaking, Swimming, collecting shellfish, fishing or relaxing on the beach are all popular Northland activities.
Tours include Dolphin and Whale Watching trips, available from Bream Bay. There are horse treks, Scenic chartered flights, Chartered big game fishing trips and guided caving, at the Abbey Caves near Whangarei and at the Waipu Caves, where you can abseil to see spectacular rock formations as well as enjoy the magnificent views from the top
