Seeing a wild kiwi foraging for food against a backdrop of moonlit sky is something completely unique to New Zealand. There are plenty of surprises on this little adventure - things tend to pop out at you!... as the light fades.

The Kiwi is a flightless nocturnal bird. It's the smallest member of the "Ratite" family, which also includes Ostriches from Africa and Emus from Australia. Not only is this extraordinary looking creature an emblem of New Zealand's national identity, it?s also an icon of the people's "spirit".

Kiwis can live in almost any habitat. At one point Kiwis were found almost everywhere from sea level to alpine environments; you'd find them in scrubland, farmland, swamps, pine forest and vegetated gullies.

Nowadays unfortunately, they have to fight for their survival. The introduction of pests (stoats, ferrets, feral cats etc.) along with intensive farming and deforestation has been the greatest threats to the Kiwi's survival.

This is your chance to see one of these fascinating creatures in their own environment. From the comfort of a hide you'll see them up close at eye level feeding amongst the leaf litter. You can't do this anywhere else in the world. Bookings are essential for this excursion. Viewings are restricted to a maximum of five people at any one time and there has to be a minimum of two for the trip to go ahead.

It costs around NZ$25 per person which has to be paid at the time of booking. Tours will be cancelled if there is too few participants or if the weather isn't suitable. Full refunds will be given.
