Raglan is New Zealand’s most popular surf destination. The quality left-hand point-break at Manu Bay was introduced to the surfing world in 1964, by Bruce Brown’s epic surf movie “The Endless Summer”. The town is situated around the Raglan/Waingaroa Harbour, on the Waikato’s western coastline, in the North Island of New Zealand.

Raglan is located 50km west of Hamilton, on State Highway 23. The Waikato Regions Waingaroa Harbour reaches 12 km inland and rests on this small settlement’s doorstep. Nearby the majestic Mt Karioi (a dormant volcano) and the Tasman Sea, add to the ambiance of this laidback town.

Raglan was named after Fitzroy Somerset, 1st Lord Raglan, who was the commander of the British troops in the Crimean War, when Raglan was settled in 1855.

Today there is a local population of about 3500 people. The area is also a popular holiday destination. Because of its close proximity to Hamilton, many of he city’s residents have baches or holiday houses here, to escape from the rat race when they can. There are also many boats permanently moored here, as this secluded harbour opens out onto some excellent fishing grounds.

Raglan or “Rags” as most surfers call it, is most popular for its surf options. This coast picks up more then its fair share of swell and the contours of the land and ocean floor here can create some of the best quality, most consistent surf in the country, if not the world. 8 km west of the town are 4 excellent left hand point breaks, which peel mechanically over volcanic reefs. The surf here attracts surfers from all over the world. This spot also has a strong local scene, as well as its own board designs.

Take a 15 minute drive in the direction of Kawhia, then an easy ten minute walk up the Pakoka River. This brings you to the top of the spectacular Bridal veil falls. The water plunges 55 metres! There is a steep but well made track down to the pool at the bottom, with lots of great photo opportunities.

Raglan offers a multitude of accommodation options. The camping ground is a popular place to pitch a tent or park your campervan, there are plenty of bed and breakfasts, homestays, farmstays, a backpacker hostel, apartments, self contained cottages, batches, holiday houses, and caravans, to rent. Accommodation is in high demand throughout the year, Raglin's visitors should be advised to book their accommodation in advance.
