Travel along the last remote stretches of the Pacific Coast Highway into Maori country. You will see some of the most spectacular and panoramic scenery in the New Zealand.

This is one of the last remaining untouched areas. You will see endless stretches of deserted coastline, with stunningly beautiful empty beaches, wild horses roaming freely as well as sheep, sheep and more sheep. It is also the first place in the world to see the sun each new-dawned day.

This area is very popular for walking, fishing, and scuba diving, snorkeling, boating and surfing. It is definitely one of the country's best kept secrets. You will find the best surfing on the beaches just north of the Gisbourne Town. White water rafting is possible on the Waioeke and Motu Rivers.

If you want to go walking, go to the state forest parks of Ruatoria, Raukumara, Urutawa and Waioeka. There are numerous tracks you can take through some of the most diverse natural landscape in the country. You can stay the night on the world famous Mt Hikurangi and see the first light of the new day.

There are certain areas of the parks where you can go mountain biking, but in many parts the terrain is just too rough.

This is also where you will find the largest native forest area on New Zealand's North Island. The Te Urewera National park is the largest park in the North Island. You can walk the stunning Waikaremoana Track; one of New Zealand's great walks around the lake of the same name.

Urewera is literally bursting with wildlife. It's home to a wide variety of birds, trout and deer, amongst others. Take time to observe them as you pass by boat or on walks.
Kayaking is also possible here and is the perfect way of getting a different perspective on the lake and its beautiful surroundings.
