Tauranga is the largest city in the Bay of Plenty Region, in the North Island of New Zealand. Situated 94 km west of Whakatane and 109 km east of Hamilton Tauranga is the fastest growing city in the country. The Port of Tauranga takes care of most of the regions exports but also is graced with visits from many luxury cruise liners too. Around Tauranga are many fine beaches, raging rivers and orchids, orchids and more orchids.

Tauranga is a lively little port city with a warm sub-tropical climate and has plenty to be enjoyed. Maori culture is thriving here, there are many Marae or meeting houses, in the district, where you can see an exhibition and learn more about our interesting customs and culture.

It’s a great place to go shopping, Tauranga City has the full range of international and national chain stores as well as many small boutique stores offering an interesting array of apparel. There are also four large shopping malls around the city including; Bayfair, Greerton Shopping Center, Fraser Cove and the Papamoa Plaza.

The name Tauranga means “sheltered anchorage”. Tauranga Harbour is sheltered by Mount Maunganui and Matakana Island. There is always something happening on or around the harbour. Fishermen coming or going dive crews, cruise liners, container ships, it’s a busy port.

There are numerous pristine beaches up and down the coast. Mount Manganui is the Kiwi equivalent to Surfers Paradise or Venice Beach. Papamoa further east is a popular family beach and is also one of the fastest growing populations in NZ at the moment. Matakana Island has uncrowded beaches and awesome surf spots too.

The Kaimai Ranges lye 20 km south of Tauranga City. There are many very good walking tracks throughout the ranges and a few small huts for overnight stays.

The Bay of Plenty has a very good growing climate. Around Tauranga are many orchids, kiwi fruit and citrus are the main exports. There are a few boutique wineries which offer tasting and tours.

Tauranga is home to the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic as well as a branch of the University of Waikato.

At the end of a busy day a great way to relax is at the mineral hot pools at Kati kati.

There is a wide range of accommodation in the Tauranga area. You can choose from Lodges, hotel, motel, apartments and boutique accommodation, to provide a restful break in comfort and style, as B&B’s, homestays and farmstays provide an authentic Kiwi experience. There is a popular range of backpacker hostels and other budget options to ensure that everyone can find accommodation to suit their needs. There is also some very nice camping grounds and holiday parks and DOC campsites set in beautiful park like surroundings, these are nice places to park the campervan, motorhome or pitch the tent. Accommodation can be in high demand, so guests are advised to book in advance.
