On State Highway 1, about 40 km south of Dunedin and only 15 km from Dunedin International Airport is the lakeside village of Waihola. Lake Waihola is a tidal freshwater lake, its area is 9 square kilometres, with a length of 6 kilometres.

Lake Waihola, is the larger of two lakes, the smaller being Lake Waipori, which are situated between the Taieri and Tokomairiro Plains. The lake drains into the Waipori River, a tributary of the Taieri.
Both lakes are quite shallow and are surrounded by wetlands, including the protected Sinclair Wetlands.
Described as the most important privately owned wetland in New Zealand, Sinclair Wetlands is also an area rich in the history and the traditions of Ngāi Tahu, the Maori people from this area. The wetlands are the home to many species of rare native birds, native trout and the black swan.

Waihola has a population of about 200 people, nestled against the lake's eastern edge, it has facilities for fishing, yachting, waterskiing, and the lake is also an important rowing venue. Lake Waihola, has the largest catchments of all of the lakes lake in Otago, It affords safe swimming and sheltered picnic areas for all to enjoy.

From Waihola drive the Taieri Mouth road, where lookouts afford spectacular views of hills, lakes and sea, make sure you check out the Taieri Ferry Bridge, it was built in 1891, and the first of its kind in New Zealand. Numerous boats and steamers carried produce and passengers between Lake Waihola and the coast.

Descend to the fishing village of Taieri Mouth, 13 km from Waihola, it offers perfect picnic spots, with views of beaches and cliffs. Fishing and boat tours are available, making Taieri Mouth an attractive holiday spot.

There are numerous stunning beaches up and down this coast, many have that perfect surf break when the swell and wind are compatible.
Just south of Taieri Mouth, visit the Akatore fault line, a steep rocky escarpment in the hills.
