In the Southland region you will experience everything from towering rainforests, alpine tussocks, rolling fertile farmlands and golden beaches stretching as far as the eye can see, within a days travel. Its like a dozen destinations rolled into one. The region of Southland covers an area of 28'681 km². In the 2001 census it had a population of about 91'000, making it one of New Zealand's most scarcely populated areas. It is bordered by National Parks and marine reserves, including Fiordland National Park covering the south-western corner of the South Island. There is much rich farmland to the north, as far as the beautiful central lakes of neighbouring Otago.
The main town in the Southland region is Invercargill.

With its wide open spaces, and a roomy ratio of just one person to every 30 hectares of land, there is plenty of scope for serenity and solitude.

Invercargill is favourably placed on the Southern Scenic Route and is the gateway to some of New Zealand's most beautiful scenery and destinations including the Southland Lakes and Queenstown, Stewart Island, Fiordland and The Catlins.

This region is celebrated for its off the beaten track activities and attractions, yet Southland is easily accessible and offers quality amenities and services, including world-class fare and an inviting range of accommodation.


Situated on the southern-most coast of the South Island of New Zealand, The Catlins is a major highlight of the Southern Scenic Route. Winding between Fortrose and Kaka Point, you will travel through farmland, forest and spectacular coastlines. A great way to see this part of New Zealand is with a campervan or motorhome.

Southlands surf is renowned throughout the country. There are so many choices of walking tracks and byways, take some, and discover the sometimes peaceful, sometimes rugged treasures of The Catlins.
