A five minute drive over the hill east of Whakatane brings you to the beautiful sea-side town of Ohope.

Turn left at the bottom of the hill and you are at West End one of the districts most popular surf beaches. At the western end of the beach there is a ten minute walk around the headland to the stunning, secluded Otarawairere Beach. If you are fortunate enough to be returning after dark, keep your eyes open for the glow-worms under the bank beside the track. There is 11 km of fine sandy beach, stretching from West End Ohope to the Ohiwa Spit which is home to many bird species. Its worth checking out Ohiwa, there is a lovely stretch of beach here and a superb natural harbour. It has a very scenic golf course and a bird sanctuary at the end of the spit.
