Bluff is located at the bottom of the South Island of New Zealand, in the Southland Region. Bluff is the gateway to Stewart island. Bluff the Pearl of the south, is unique in the fact that it is the oldest European settlement in New Zealand, added to that it has had a very colourful past. It is also home to the world famous Bluff Oyster. Bluff is the southernmost town in the South Island.

State highway 1 starts at Bluff's Stirling Point, an attraction in itself. Stirling Point is to New Zealand what Lands end is to Great Britain.

Bluff has a lot to offer the discerning traveller with attractions such as the Maritime Museum, Stirling Point, Fred and Myrtles Paua house, panoramic views from the viewing platform on top of Bluff Hill (Motupohe), and our highly recommended walking tracks.

Some say that Bluff oysters are the finest in the world. They are grown slowly in the cold clean waters of the Foveaux Strait. In season, they are dredged by Bluffs oyster fleet. When oyster cultivation first began in the 1860s it was a race to get the first oysters back to the wharf. Today some boats are met by helicopters who whisk the oysters away to be distributed throughout the world.
